Tamil TV Serials

When you have elders living with you, your house is always filled with sound - I am not meaning the talking among the family members - I mean the TV Sound. In earlier days, the old people used to go out everyday to some temple or have other kind of social engagement, but now their time is well occupied by watching TV. I have my mother in law who is 80+ who is living with us. What a treasure Trove of knowledge she is. She knows anything and everything under the sun. But nowadays it has become an addiction for her to watch TV serials all the time. What a best channel surfer she is - she watches 2/3 serials at the same time in different channels. I dont know how can she is able to follow all the serials without getting confused.

In our house, the switching on of the TV starts from the early morning - which is filled with lot of divine things in terms of Temple visits or Rendition of various Songs on Gods/Goddess or other discourses. But at 1030 am starts her office schedule - One serial after the other - Like this it goes on till about 2.30 and then there is afternoon siesta time. Come evening, one again her office starts and ends at 11.00 pm.

Coming to these serials -The Serials that are being currently aired - My God where is my Society going. In our tradition, we dont encourage crying in the house, and especially in the twilight time. it is believed that with the lighting of the small lamp near the God, at this twilight time, you are inviting The Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi to come and in and reside. She brings with her not only wealth, but also peace and happines. Seh has a sister who is exact opposite of her and her sister is Moodevi who is the harbinger of all problems. It is believed that only either of the two sister can live in a particular house. While Laksmi comes into that are inviting her by being well lit, filled with either laughter, or calm or quiet and also all the people are up and about with no one is sleeping at the twilight time, Moodevi comes in when the house is dark, or is filled with crying, etc (all those activities considered inauspicious). Now coming back to my point, you enter a house after 5.30, you can hear crying, cursing, etc - all going on in the serials - What are we doing to our age old beliefs. More than anything on Friday evening, they will show you some person who is dead and also show vividly the last rites being performed for him or her - where are our religious sentiments.

More than these, the serials depict most of the people as villains - motherinlaw out to destroy the daughter in law, the daughter in law out to destroy the motherinlaw, the sisters plotting against one another, the brothers wanting to show their onemanship, the friends giving negative advice - all things shown blatantly - so you live and breath only negativity. You are spoiling the good relationship between people. After having seen some episode on the tv anything that is happening naturally in life, you tend to give a different reason and start suspecting your relations. Is it really necessary that we are teaching by visuals all the bad things in life. Is there any body listening. The censorship need not be restricted to only vulgarity in dressing or talking - it can be extended to even vulgarity/negativity in story line. The producers may well argue that to showcase the Postivityor Goodness they have to portray the Bad and at the end should show that Goodness alone triumphs. But Sir, for 364 days you show all negative things and one day show the Positive things - which will win Tell me.

Third thing about our serials is the "stretccccccccccccccching of the story line to fill in the episodes, why dont we have a policy of having only x no of episodes say no story should exceed 20 episodes which will fill one month or even say a max of 3 months. That way the story will be told very crisply. Here you have serials stretching even to years together with lot of time fillers - everday you really get a quality time of the real story line of just 5-10 mts at the maximum for a serial of 30 mts duration.

Fourth one, is the abrupt end to these serials - Everybody gets so involved into the serial and then lo and behold - either because the producer has fallen out of favour with the tv channel or gets a chance in another channel or a new serial has to be aired - your bloody idiotic viewers - hell with you - Here comes the End. Everything will happen in a jiffy and all the loose ends will e left hanging loose and the main characters alone will be settled(dont imagine that they will get a better finish, ever there something to resemble a close off will be shown) Obviously like the "die hard returns or the Jurassic Park continues - our stories can also continue as part of the another serial.

do the producers and directors ever think of the viewers at all? What about the TV serials in other countries/regions - are you having the same kind of treatment. With these question, let me leave the readers
