The professor who donated his BMW
YES - it is unbelieve, but true.
I have adopted this title from Robin Sharma's book The monk who sold his Ferrari -
as the book talks of the spiritual experience, here is a living example of such a kind of person who is contented in life and is not afaird of giving, taking care of people and more than anything sharing his knowledge. One of my professors had bought a BMW and then donated it away. His life is a fine example of what happens to knowledge when it is given away, you only get more of it. He not only talks the talk, but walks it too.
Coming to the Hero of this Post, I am talking about Prof V K Murti. Currently he teaches at SPJIMR, Great Lakes and does consulting to various "small companies" - apart from teaching Management to a group of young students aged about 15 years(this is done as a hobby) - A very simple man filled with lot of wisdom. Note here the usage of Wisdom - it is not just knowledge alone which is essential, but converting it into a higher realm of things is what Wisdom is all about.
When he takes the class on "Marketing or Sales" - things which looked unsurmontable becomes easy. After the classes you walk away with your thinking power induced to replicate whatever he has taken in the class to the ground situation.
Recently, I saw him in action, -We have a young employee joining us to take care of Business development. Of course, the young person had done the ground work of analyzing the industry, the strengths of our company, and come out with excellent plans. He sat with the employee through the day, led the person on with the plans very patiently and made the person write out the simple objective and go forward in the right way to get to the Ideal Customer Profile, so that the person's task of achieing the stated number in the business goal becomes easier to handle. Have you seen a Kindergarden teacher taking the hand of her young students and make them write out the albahets patiently again and again. The same scene was enacted on Sunday (Mind you, this work is totally Pro bano for him). He refuses to take the consulting fees, just getting reimbursed for his trip from Bombay to Madras. He says, lets get the results and then we can see about his fees. This is just not the one time he has gone but he repeated does like this. coming into Madras just for us and leaving the same night (also, he always takes the low cost airflights to save us as much money as possible) Can you believe such a person exists in this world.
I dont think we are the only company who gets this kind of differntial treatment, if I know him correctly, he does like this to many small companies enabling them to get focussed with their growth effort. There are also individuals who take his consulting this way too.
There are a very few of such Wonderful Persons. Hats off to you Sir, It is indeed my greatest fortune to being your student eternally. May God give you all the very best of Health and Wealth throught out your life.
My friends, if you know Murti, do write more about him so that the world knows him more
