Salary for the police personnel

Recently there was a news item in US newspaper that the salary for the policemen in New York is being raised. so what is great about this news item is the question anyone will ask.
I was literally shocked to read through the item - you know why - it is not about the amount of raise (which is incidentally was only 10,000 $ per year) It is about the monthly salary that is being paid to these people - it is paltry sum of $ 25,000 per year, which works out to just US $ 2000 per month. You know what, our software engineers who get a job in US after having a minimum of 3-4 years get double that amount. Please dont immediately convert it into Indian rupees and say Oh my god what a salary - Just to give you a small break of expenses here
Rent for a one room apartment - 1000 $ per month
Food expenses - 500 $
Monthly travel expenses 100 $
Other incidentals - 400 $
So that is all that is there - what will they do for clothing, dinning out, etc. I am only assuming that they will get a rental apartment which is close to the city for 1000$, which will minimize their travel expenses. (My nephew pays around 550$ per month as his share for the rental accommodation for house which is shared by 4 persons and he lives in Jersey city from where he needs to take a train to reach the New York city. Also, he needs to walk a minimum of 10mts from his home to reach the station. Only for those people who know the severity of winter can understand how painful it will be to walk this 10 mts.
Coming to the point of this email, when they can barely sustain themselves with this kind of salary, the whole world expects them to be having High sense of duty for their work, be sincere, hardworking, pleasant and people loving, etc, etc. all this also comes with the risk to their lives for taking up this job. Why are we not paying our most important people enough, since they give back so much for us.
Even back in our country, the situation is similar - have any one of you seen the Police quarters and the military quarters for the lower level people, - that is very terrible. In Agra, we were living in Cant area and so had a lot of friends who were working in Air force. It is always said that the air force people are given the quarters for living, the actual reality is that they have to wait for a long time to get a quarters allocated to them ( by the time the quarters alloctment letter comes to them, it is almost the time for their transfer). The quarters is just one bedroom and a hall and a tiny kitchen.
The policy makers have to make things alright for these kind of people. I believe, we need to talk and discuss such social issues more than the social gossips that go around. Lets make the change ourselves please
