Chennai
My city - where I have spent most of my life.
Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and is on the south east part of India situated on the Coast of the Bay of Bengal. With an estimated population of 7.5 million (2007), it is the fourth largest metropolitan city in India.
The city was established in the seventeenth century by the British, who developed it into a major urban centre and naval base. By the twentieth century, it had become an important administrative centre, as the capital of the Madras Presidency.
Chennai's economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. The city is home to much of India's automobile industry and is the country's second-largest exporter of information technology (IT) and information-technology-enabled services behind Bangalore. Though a late starter in IT scenario, Chennai has really caught up. The population varies from very conservative to cosmopolitan outlook. While almsot all the people are tradition bound, you will find that the intellect of the people have allowed them to embrace many things.
The city is served by an international airport and two major ports; it is connected to the rest of the country by five national highways and two railway terminals namely Chennai Central Station and Chennai Egmore Station. While the former connects to outside state cities apart from catering to the Tamilnadu's western parts, the later almost caters to the southern regions of the Tamil Nadu. Thirty-five countries have consulates in Chennai.
Chennai hosts a large cultural event, the annual Madras Music Season, which includes performances by hundreds of artists. The traditional music is called "Carnatic Music" and includes all the regional languages. The trinities of the Carnatic Music are very revered Especially during the December season, it is music on air. The city has a vibrant theatre scene and is an important centre for the Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form. The Tamil movie industry, known as Kollywood, is based in the city; the soundtracks of the movies dominate its music scene.
Chennai is known for its sport venues and hosts an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event, the Chennai Open. Cricket has a predominant followership in India and chennai & Tamil Nadu boosts of good spinners like Venkataraghavan who then become a very good umpire and good opening batsman Srikanth. The very famous cricket stadium is MA Chidambaram stadium of international repute.
Chennai is home to many publishing houses too. The major newspapers are The Hindu, and the Indian Express while in Tamil - which is the native language we have newspapers like Thanthi, Dina Mani, etc.
